Vacation is over and it is time to get back to reality. Looking at all I need to do to settle into our routine is overwhelming at the moment.
My eyes scan my house: suitcases to be unpacked and put away, mail to sort through, house to be cleaned, computer work to be done, blogs, newsletters, groceries, and, of course, being a mom.
At the moment, my breath catches at all that needs to be done and the feeling of immediacy to complete something…anything!
Deep breath in…all the way down to my toes like I tell the girls to do when they feel overwhelmed.
What is my Go-To activity when To-Do’s fly at me from multiple directions? I make a list. Somehow, that calms me down. I am being active in the listing and feel victorious when I can cross out something. Yes, I know that I can write it on my Iphone and have Siri remind to do this or that, but there is something tangible about actually crossing out an action item.
My list allows me the focus to move step by step through my day and chores. My breathing slowly comes back to normal and I can relax into getting done what I can get done. I have imposed the need to complete and I can also tell my self to cut myself some slack.
I bring my awareness back to what my need is: completion or productivity? What is the priority?
Each day’s task list gives different answers depending on what needs to be done. It is only after reviewing my list that I can honestly look and ask what is most important. Today, with so much to be done, completion wins. Complete it, Leave it, move forward is my mantra for the afternoon!
Time to get rockin’….see you on the other side!
