Talisman

July 20, 2013 / by Elif Ekin / 1 Comment

talismansA talisman is an object which is believed to contain certain magical properties which would provide good luck for the possessor and possibly offer protection from evil or harm. Wikipedia

It has been interesting for me to observe the girls [Mina & Allegra], at different times, prepare for a vacation away from me. When Mina left for Turkey, she asked for a necklace which would have lots of “mommy-love” in it that she could wear while she was away from me, to “feel” my love close to her. She also thought to give ME something to wear, filled with Mina-love, so I would feel close to her too. She gave me a bracelet to wear.

Last night, I said Good-Bye to Allegra. She left for a week vacation with her mom this morning to Cape Cod. She had a hard time with me leaving and asked if there was something she could have to take with her to feel me near her. I searched my wallet and all I could come up with was a simple Rose Quartz ring. She really wanted a necklace, she said, so she could wear it and feel the love. So, we raided the craft closet and found a ribbon that had LOVELOVELOVE written all over it, made the ring into a necklace, and I tied it around her neck. At which point, she held it out to me “Please kiss it and fill it with lots of love!”

Suddenly, she was running back to her room and came out with a cat pin, for ME to wear and take with me. She wanted us to feel connected in some way.

Children have a natural ability to feel magic and love all around them, infused in everything. When they feel insecure or scared, they reach for something tangible to hold onto, sometimes it is something from someone they love. They know, inside, that an essence of that loved one remains somehow enmeshed in that piece of jewelry or clothing. It becomes their magical Talisman or touch stone. They have something to connect them with Love when they need it.

Somehow, as we grow older, Logic replace Innocent Belief systems. These Innocent Beliefs soon turn into Limiting Beliefs, limiting our potential, and we forget who we are on the inside-That Magical Child. We get so busy Growing up, we forget how to play and have fun with ourselves and life in general.

Our thoughts shift from “I can fly to the moon with my sparkle shoes” into “Life is Hard, get used to it.” How come? How come there is this dominance on the struggle, the hardship? How come it is difficult for others to support each other to aspire and hope for more Joy? Does it cause unrest inside you to support someone else’s efforts to step “Out-of-the Box?” Does it remind you of your own dreams that you are scared to reach for? What would happen if you DID try? What’s the worst that could happen?

Am I asking too many questions? I feel like the petulant child asking “WHYWHYWHY?” and not getting a satisfactory answer. Maybe because each person has his/her own answer and no one else can understand because it’s not their life.

For me, I will make sure that our house is always filled with Love and Magic. I don’t want the girls to get so pushed down from living that forget about LIFE!

Zola will be the one to push the Big Girls out of their comfort zones with her straightforward approach to Life: “Mama Leaf, I am not scared actually!” Maybe they will need their Talismans, maybe not, but they will always have a Touchstone to remind them that they are Loved and Safe
