ok, I’m feeling goofy this morning, but do you remember the scene from the Princess Bride when Buttercup is about to marry Humperdink? The priest had that weird voice-yep, you remember. Anyway, I have his voice in my head saying “Toilet paper. It’s what keeps us together today.”
I guess I should explain why I am talking about toilet paper this early in the morning. Yesterday at breakfast, Zola was talking about Mummies and Halloween. In her pseudo-teenage attitude filled voice she says: I can Totally be a Mummy, I really can-you KNOW!
From across the table, I caught her eye and said “Absolutely, shall we make you a mummy after breakfast? First, you need to eat!” Now, Allegra is wide eyed wondering how we are going to make Zola into a mummy-Wrap her up in toilet paper, of course! At first they didn’t think I was serious and would look at me quizzically over their pancakes, distracted with HOW it would play out.
What started out as an offhand crazy Sunday morning activity soon turned into a very cool project on many levels.
1. It’s cheap project and there is always a roll of toilet paper (hopefully) handy.
2. We are thinking creatively about how to transform toilet paper into a Mummy.
3. The girls begin to learn how delicate the paper is and SLOOOOWWWW DOWWNNN to be more careful.
4. They learned to focus their attention, be more mindful of tucking the paper where it would be secure and not rip.
5. They had to problem solve when there was a tear and things fell apart, learning that there is no ONE way to make a mummy.
6. They learned how to re-use the paper to wrap Allegra…then me!
7. Finally, their imagination was so open that the torn bits of toilet paper soon transformed into Snow and we had a Snow ball toilet paper fight in the middle of the living room, ambushing Alex whenever he came through. Oh the girls were erupting with laughter at every throw!
Just to give you an idea of the amount of toilet paper we were playing with, here is a little clip of Allegra just before she got the idea to have a Snow Ball Fight.
What a fun morning that we were all able to come together for almost 2 hours, play, laugh and be silly. It’s the simple things that bring us together, isn’t it?
This cracks me up!!! I wish I could quote this line more often.
One time, when my kids were very tiny, we did a harvest party and that was the hit game- TP Mummys. It was the funnest games, EVER!
It sounds like you all learned so much.
🙂 We did! we were laughing so hard that it almost became a “pee in the pants” party! At least we had toilet paper “handy” if that happened 😉
