….And She Flew!

March 14, 2014 / by Elif Ekin / 1 Comment

…and she flew to Tomorrow, to a place where things were better. ~Guy’s Story, The Croods

swing AvedonSometimes the inspiration to write comes from a single moment in time, something that began as one thing and turned into another. It is about being open and aware because inspiration, lessons, messages come when you least expect it…like watching a movie, The Croods, with your daughter!

What she got out of the movie and what I got out of the movie are probably two different things. She loved the str

ong character of Eep, the cave girl, marveled at her courage and how she always wanted to know more. I could see how Mina identified with her: Mina has a very strong sense of self, can be very brave, and questions E.V.E.R.Y.T.H.I.N.G!!!

Me? What did I get out of the movie? When your world gets turned upside down and disappears, how can you set forth and create a new life? I saw the internal conflict that we, adults, experience in our brain about trying new things personified in Grog, the father and Guy, the boy. Grog is the Amygdala “be afraid of everything” side of the brain trying to control Guy, or “curiosity” who is starting to think outside of the box.

Fear keeps us locked in our own cave, in the darkness because we fear our own light. Embracing our light is powerful..it has the power to help or hurt! It is easier to hide, play victim of circumstance, than to bravely step out onto the precipice and take a leap of faith. In the movie, Grog, the dad, says that it is his job to keep the family alive by hiding them in the cave. To which Eep replies: That’s not being alive, that’s just not dying.

Whenever I feel a bit low, disenchanted about how life is moving, I always hear Lyn, my coach, in the back of my mind saying: Focus your light, shine it on the one thing you believe in most and feel your strength.

Always move toward the light, toward tomorrow …just keep moving. If its dark, close your eyes and use your own inner light, your heart, to guide you.
